At St. Mary's Catholic School, we believe in building a community where excellence, learning, and safety are at the heart of everything we do. We want our students fully engaged in the programs we offer, free from unnecessary distractions, and connected to the people who matter most: their teachers, coaches, and peers. These relationships help develop the lifelong skills our students need to succeed.
This year, we’re excited to introduce a partnership with Smart Families. They are an organization that works with parents and schools to create safer, healthier, and happier environments for children by strengthening family connections and helping us navigate the impact of technology.
Smart Families shares neuroscience-based research on how technology affects the brain and offers practical tools to help families make thoughtful choices. Their mission aligns closely with ours: to honor the human dignity of every child and help them thrive, not just academically, but as whole people. When families push back together against the pressure of screens and distractions, we make more space for strong relationships and lasting values.
As part of this partnership, we are inviting every family in our school community to adopt four shared norms that support student well-being and healthy development: 1. Prioritize your family and your values. 2. Delay smartphones until high school. 3. Delay social media until at least age 16. 4. Phone-free school day.
These norms reflect the best available research and the collective wisdom of parents and educators who are choosing to lead with intention, not convenience. By aligning these shared commitments, we give our children the gift of presence, clarity, and connection.
We also want to emphasize the importance of parent engagement. One of the most valuable steps you can take is to attend the upcoming Smart Families Parent Talk on neuroscience and screens and the Family Code Workshop. We ask that at least one parent from every family participates in the Parent Talk. These events offer actionable guidance and strengthen the partnership between home and school in meaningful ways. Details of these events will be shared on our social media and in our school newsletters.
Throughout the school year, we’ll be sharing educational events and resources for students and families, both during the day and online in the evenings. Again, look for details in our RAM REPORT each week.
Thank you for your support and for partnering with us to make this school a place where every student can thrive. We’re looking forward to a fantastic year!”
