PK3-12 Classical Education in the Catholic Tradition
At St. Mary’s, we believe that a child’s day is about more than academics. PASE provides a meaningful capstone to the school day—a welcoming space where children can relax, create, play, and discover what brings them joy.
PASE is a multi-tiered gift to your child’s overall development. Through a balance of semi-structured activities and child-directed leisure, students have opportunities to develop independence, creativity, friendships, and practical skills while giving their minds and bodies time to transition from the demands of the school day to home.
Children need time to simply be children.
PASE provides a safe and nurturing environment where students can choose from a variety of activities and have a measure of control over how they spend their downtime. This experience helps children begin to recognize what interests them, what relaxes them, and what brings them a sense of fulfillment.
PASE’s semi-structured environment gives children room to relax while still engaging their minds and bodies.
They might knit, play chess, participate in a soccer game, enjoy a board or card game, draw, paint, cut and glue, build, or simply imagine.
The goal is not to make every moment productive. The goal is to provide a healthy environment in which children can discover how to use their time well.
One of the special qualities of PASE is the opportunity for children of different ages to interact.
Many PASE activities are designed to welcome a broad range of ages. Younger children can learn by observing and participating with older students, while older children have opportunities to practice leadership, patience, cooperation, and encouragement.
Knitting is one example of how an apparently simple activity can support a child’s development in many ways.
As children learn to knit, they practice:
There is something uniquely satisfying about beginning with a simple tool and a strand of yarn and gradually creating something beautiful and uniquely their own.
PASE also provides children with opportunities to explore their creativity through hands-on art and craft activities.
Students may work with:
Projects might include creating rosaries, crowns, door hangers, drawings, and other imaginative creations.
These activities encourage children to experiment, make choices, solve problems, and turn an idea in their imagination into something they can hold in their hands.
At its heart, PASE is about helping children grow.
We want our students to experience the joy of learning beyond the traditional classroom—to discover their interests, develop new skills, interact with children of different ages, and learn that relaxation and leisure can be healthy and meaningful parts of life.
