St. Mary's School was opened in August of 1896 to eighty students. It is the oldest private school in Williamson County. St. Mary's is part of the Diocese of Austin, Texas. St. Mary's School and St. Mary of the Assumption Church are both wonderful examples of classic architecture. The church's stained glass windows and carved marble altar are especially beautiful, moving and peaceful.
It took more than simply beautiful buildings to make a school. Teachers and students were needed. In the early years, the Dominican Sisters brought religion, discipline, and solid education to the students of St. Mary's. They also instilled sound moral and spiritual values in all St. Mary's students of all ages! Later, lay teachers became more integral to the school and its mission.

Today, St. Mary's has become an integral part of the Taylor and surrounding communities. We are growing steadily and have recently added a high school, providing education from PK3 - 12th grades! Many of St. Mary's graduates now have children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren in attendance. We are truly a family, working for Christ and for His children, young and old. We enjoy the continuance of the Dominican Sisters as part of the excellence in education and spirituality. The Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops Education Department (TCCB ED) cooperates with diocesan school offices to oversee the accreditation of Catholic schools in Texas.
The goals of Catholic education in Texas schools are to
1) promote a community of believers, learners, and active doers in the spirit of Jesus Christ in the Catholic Church,
2) to provide instructional leadership and maintain effective and efficient programs of studies, and
3) to implement a curriculum that represents a school’s mission which is shared by teachers, students, and parents/guardians.

St. Mary's Catholic School is a Premier Member School of the Institute for Catholic Liberal Education (ICLE).
Since the Second Vatican Council, the Church has called for the renewal of Catholic education at all levels, from grade school through universities. A Catholic education needs to be more than just a secular school with a religion class. The ICLE offers teacher training and professional development to help our faculty realize this vision.
The ICLE helps us integrate faith and reason across our curriculum. The ICLE is a community of Catholic educators who create curriculum and build school culture in light of the fullness of Catholic teaching. Martin Saints was proud to host ICLE’s annual High School Leaders Forum in 2022 and 2023, when guests came from around the country to learn more about the Martin Saints model and how to found a Catholic classical high school.
